| TASTY SOIL UPDATE!! 3 new releases |
[17 Oct 2006|11:32pm] |
------------------------------------ TASTY SOIL UPDATE!!! OCTOBER 18 2006 ------------------------------------ ( HTTP://WWW.TASTYSOIL.COM )
Three new releases in the Tasty Soil Store!
--------------------------------------- SLITHER - SELF TITLED CD ---------------------------------------

Totally sickening freeform horn disease mixed with occasional tape loops. Imagine being locked away in a cave, eating roots to stay alive, drinking water through the earth, worms, slugs and moles watching you waste away till you loose your mind
Slither is a Saxaphone and Clairanet duo featuring Heath Moerland & Chris Pottinger. This album was recorded live on an east coast tour and consists of six different performances recorded in basements, clubs and living rooms. The audio on this cd was mastered by Warn Defever, Artwork and packaging design by Chris Pottinger.
--------------------------------------------------------------------- COTTON MUSEUM - CREATURE CD & ART SET --------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the first in a series of "CREATURE" releases on Tasty Soil featuring super deluxe creature packaging all drawn, hand cut and assembled by Chris Pottinger! Volume 1 is from Cotton Museum, with one long track recorded last year with the sounds of this rancid, bulging eyed beast.
Bursting pustules, infected sores, and veins snaking around his tumorous skull are some of the things you'll hear while listining to this cd.
This beast is reproduced in full color with 10mil thick lamination, custom designed color cardstock foldover with the cd housed on the back of the creature--impossible to file away, you might as well hang it on your wall! Strictly 100 hand numbered copies of each creature release in existance, due to the very labor intensive process the packaging takes to create.
-------------------------------------------- TASTY SOIL "BEAST" T-SHIRT -------------------------------------------

A brand new Tasty Soil t-shirt design limited to 57 shirts. This traveler can be found walking through the swamps and forests searching for succulent grubs to gorge himself on.
All shirts are pro-silkscreened with chocolate color ink on a light brown t-shirt. The detail on these shirts came out great!
( HTTP://WWW.TASTYSOIL.COM ) for lots of pictures of all the releases
Also, if you live near Ann Arbor, MI tomorrow night, come out to this show........

The fifth in a series of concerts that feature touring musicians and the best of Michigan's experimental music scene at Gallery Project, Ann Arbor's most innovative independent art space. This month: two artists based in Michigan, but known the world around. Livonia's His Name is Alive stretches songs into sounds. Detroit's Cotton Museum makes psychedelic clouds of noise.

| Updates and Stuff |
[24 Jul 2006|12:22am] |
|
It's been ages since i've updated anything here or on tasty soil, and thats because i've moved to a new house out in Hamtramck, MI with my friend Jamie. We don't have the internet so it makes it hard to do any web stuff, which has led me to be a WAAYYY more productive person. I also decided not to bring a TV out, so my entertainment around the house is drawing, recording music or working on getting new releases ready for Tasty Soil.
Here is a photo of my art studio:

not pictured in this photo, but on the opposite side of the room i have another table set up for button making, and paper cutting/folding for the record label.
I got my room set up pretty nice too:

Some projects i've been working on are putting together a live SLITHER cd (recorded on the Cotton Museum/Sick Lllama tour ) which is Heath and I on Clarinet & Saxophone with tape loops. I'm in the process of putting together the new COTTON MUSEUM cd that has been in the works for a while, and it's turning out looking better then I had hoped. There is going to be a new TASTY SOIL t-shirt design with a front and back print (1 color) and if I can get it all wrapped up soon there will also be a NORTHAMPTON WOOLS cdr which is Bill Nace (vampire belt) and Thurston Moore collabo on dual guitars. Bill and I are going to do an art collaboration through the mail for that one.
Oh also, my friend Alice started a monthly 1" button club that I have some designs in, last months theme was owls, so I used that owl I drew a long time ago, but this next month the theme is octopus's--jamie and I have designs in it--here is mine:

There is going to be a group art show at the BUDDHA BAR on 8mile AUGUST 11th, and the theme is MONSTER ATTACKS or something, which i'm going to have some new stuff in--(if I can make it in time---gotta start soon)
OH--one more thing, someone told me they red a review of the THURSTON/COTTON split 12" in wire, or it was mentioned or something, but he couldn't remember what issue. If anyone happened to read it, or has it, could you let me know which issue? I wanna post it on Tasty Soil. THANKS!!

| ODD CLOUDS "THE CAVERNOUS END" LP |
[10 Jun 2006|11:02pm] |
ODD CLOUDS "THE CAVERNOUS END" LP on YPSILANTI RECORDS
"Odd Clouds is a roving collective of Detroit's most touched savages led by the restless vision of bandleaders Chris Pottinger (Cotton Museum/Tasty Soil Records) and Jamie Easter (formerly of the Pirhannas and Little Claw, now touring solo as a perfomance artist of the most disturbing caliber.) After about a year of existance, we're glad to unleash "The Cavernous End" as the first full-fledged album by this tribe, a face-melting record composed of three extended feral-psyche jams. The group is prone to impropmtu and somewhat confrontational public performance, lysergic deep-woods jamming and the like, and their bone-through-the-nose approach to music comes through strong on wax. Gutteral grunting, animalistic howls, blathering bursts of woodwinds and electronic noise bubble up to the surface of primal percussion and sounds of creatures dying and being born. Sounding like a feild recording of a late-60's cult farmhouse celebration or a private-press psyche record of the same era, "The Cavernous End" is moody, scary and beautiful, and hints at the depths of future weirdness the Clouds will send our way. Only 300 copies were made, and the packaging is a beautifully silk-screened line art collaboration between Easter and Pottinger of some fucked up creatures doing their thing in the woods. " --FRED THOMAS
I have copies for sale in the TASTY SOIL STORE under "Distributed Items", or just click the link here: ( http://www.tastysoil.com/store/store2.html#odd_clouds )
ODD CLOUDS will be playing the HOLY SHIT!! FEST on June 30th at the CAID Building in Detroit with other local greats like Mammal and Tentacle Lizardo. It might be our last show with Glen, because he's moving to Texas. We hope it's not...but it might be...

| Chicago!! |

Last night was one of the most fun shows in a while, the empty bottle has a seriously insane sound system, I was really excited to jam through it. Bloodyminded obliterated everyone and played as a 5 piece and Sick Llama played a super decayed short set. Most of the night me and heath spent playing pinball--must have spent 10 bucks on it.
Here is part of a really nice review of my set Blake Edwards posted to the HN_AM list for the Empty Bottle gig...
"...Cotton Museum was, by my books, the winner. He was like a crippled rhino trying to juggle cantaloupes and visually he was completely on the mark; he played on a card table with one collapsing leg and the table lurched precariously to the point of dumping all his gear on the floor and then he went past that point, like a 45 degree angle, and then you realized, aha, everything is velcroed to the table. At times he played in lurched up against the monitors, and at one point had the table completely on its side, facing the audience, and him leaning over it, balanced on the edge, feet out. And his sound was compatible; slow throbbing gases decorated by high tone bubbles and flat tires on an abandoned freeway at 4 AM. He brought everything I'd hoped he would."

[14 Apr 2006|12:32pm] |
" COTTON MUSEUM Lots of noise music lingers at the white end, where the dominant sounds are high-pitched and unfocused, like a swarm of evil insects in the near distance. But Michigan's Chris Pottinger, aka Cotton Museum, uses a much broader and more palatable range of frequencies, and instead of hovering insistently his tones bounce and ricochet--they go past off-kilter to a kind of discomfiting perviness that's as insidious as ebola. On Beautiful Golden Fur (released by Tasty Soil in a CD-R edition of 100), wobbly globs of squeal lurch and lunge as what might be a giant vacuum outfitted with helicopter blades sucks them in and chops them up. His output actually sounds like intake--he's a predator, not a puker, which makes him one of the most genuinely bizarre noise nerds I've heard in ages. Fag Tapes honcho Heath Moerland headlines as Sick Llama, a droner who interrupts his barge-harbor ambience with dog whine. Opening the show are Is (a suburban act that sounds like a lowrider dragging its muffler through a sandstorm), Bloodyminded, Crippled Insectual (a caterwauling thrash-noise collaboration between Julia Gilman of Insect Deli and Blake Edwards of Vertonen), and I Love Presets. 9:30 PM, Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western, 773-276-3600 or 866-468-3401. --Liz Armstrong"
